The ISPF editor is called a line editor, because it works with program code as lines. Here is a screen you might see if you were working on a COBOL program using the ISPF editor:
So, the programmer types in new code or modifies existing code. There are a lot of nice features to this editor, but that's a different story to tell. This is just to show you a typical example of the applications that come with ISPF when you get it from IBM (included with z/OS).
